During my talk on Supporting Black Designers at Circle Day, I met the amazing Ashia AmavΓ©, a Squarespace designer, foodie, and Commercial Model. She’s worked with the BIGGEST brands in the game and garnered lots of expertise along the way!

She told me, β€œYou can be a model!” I laughed so hard but she was serious. She goes on to educate our group on the commercial modeling industry and how casting directors are always looking for everyday people to work with. She founded the Commercial Model Guide to use her personal experience to help every and anyone become the model they want to be.

Moral of the Story: Anyone can model!

Each One, Teach One

AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES IS MAKING STRIDES IN HIGH SCHOOL AP COURSES

In college I majored in Political Science and Africana Studies. My dream was to become a Black Studies Scholar with a focus on Black Digital Studies (still manifesting this*). That was at a time that Black Studies departments across the country were on fire - being underfunded, shut down completely, or Black professors not receiving tenure (this is still a problem today).

Today, with the endless work of Black Historians and educators, high school students can now take African American History courses for the first-time ever in this country’s history. This will create more of a pipeline for students to major in Black studies in college.

I’m so honored and privileged to have studied about Black History as a focus of my collegiate experience. It’s the foundation for much of my thinking today.
